In a nationally televised address President Anwar Sadat said no Egyptian forces remain in Libyan territory after warplanes bombed the Al Adam air base near Tobruk. He warned Khadafy not to resume attacks, while Libyan broadcasts claimed a major armored drive and a paratroop raid, amid mediation efforts with Arafat and the Arab League.
Vernon Jordan of the National Urban League harshly criticizes President Carter for not delivering on full employment welfare reform health insurance and black appointments. He notes black voters backed Carter strongly and urges action without binding allegiance while urging support for minority concerns.

Lorne Acquin, 27, of Waterbury, is charged with nine counts of murder for the deaths of Cheryl Beaudoin, her seven children aged 4 to 12, and a 6-year-old niece in a fire at the Beaudoin home in Prospect. He was held on 250000 bond pending arraignment as authorities call it the state’s worst mass homicide.
The obscenity case against publisher Al Goldstein and Milky Way Productions is scheduled to start Monday in Kansas City Kansas after multiple delays due to Goldstein's health. A court physician suggested a two month postponement, but Judge Frank G. Theis ordered proceeding in abridged sessions with possible hospital care if needed.

Newton schools will levy 2.59 mills for mandated special education programs next year and 0.59 mill for a state-mandated unemployment insurance fund. Superintendent Clark Whiting argues mandates are necessary but place a heavy local tax burden. the Harvey Marion county cooperative budget requires local taxpayers to cover 127,223 dollars with a total district levy of 56.03 mills.
Robert Whitfield was re elected chairman of the Newton Recreation Commission at the regular meeting. Waine Kelsch became vice chairman and Susan Rhoades was named secretary with Ernie Unruh and Richard Hrdlicka as members. The board heard of a Title VI CETA grant for hiring a recreation program employee and a maintenance worker, requiring a minimum of 15 weeks prior employment. Katzenberger noted the girls teenage softball district tournament success credited to Ron Wilkey. The senior citizens center grant remains in its third year and may not be available next year. The Activity Center will close at 5 p m in August and the center pool will close today for repairs for at least three weeks.
