Brig. Gen. Ralph T. Tice, Topeka native and Weather Service instructor, assumed command of the Kansas National Guard 69th Infantry Brigade. He succeeds Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Kennedy, who retires after 38 years in the service. The unit, formed in 1963, includes about 4,000 guardsmen in 30 formations and fought in Vietnam.

Bobbie Loeffler of Newton is among 30 undergraduates from midwestern colleges in Lawrence this summer. She works with Emporia State University chemistry at the National Science Foundation summer research program directed by Russell Mesler. The program funds 148 colleges in 45 states and Puerto Rico, supporting 181 projects to give outstanding students hands on research experience.
