The Senate rejects Bennett highway funding plans, proposing a one cent gas tax increase instead.
President Ford denounces Fidel Castro as an international outlaw for sending 12 000 Cuban troops to Angola and warns of appropriate measures if Cuba or any nation intervenes in the Western Hemisphere. The remarks came during a Miami naturalization ceremony as Ford campaigns for the Florida primary.
The Senate Finance Committee plans a 1977 tax cut up to 20.6 billion, at least 8.5 billion less than Ford’s plan, with the difference directed to social programs to curb the deficit. The panel keeps a 45.9 billion deficit, reallocating 8.5 billion to social programs and offsetting it with equal deficit increase.
