Pleasant Acres Elementary students present an original production Christmas Around the World at the 7 30 p m Christmas program. All pupils take speaking parts in the show.
Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez urged OPEC to raise prices 5 to 8 percent next year and dedicate extra revenue to paying debt of the world’s poorest nations. He cited $180 billion in poor-country debt and warned of catastrophe if payments falter.
President Carter proposed a broad tax plan to cut taxes for all taxpayers while the Social Security program is financed at higher levels. He pledged a progressive, simplified system with overall savings of 20 to 30 billion dollars, to be decided by Wednesday, as Congress backs the Social Security refinements.
City commissioners will convene at 9 a.m. in the city administration building to consider 17 agenda items. Five items authorize new year ordinances including defining corporate limits, approving the 1978 budget and adopting the 1977 city code, designate 1978 depositories, and authorize contracts. Additional items cover 1978 cereal malt beverage licenses and a State Energy Office Project Conserve application to fund a survey for computer energy-use analysis.
A 19 year old Colonie woman was sentenced to two years probation for embezzling 2150 dollars from The First National Bank of Scotia where she worked. She will repay the bank through monthly 61 dollar installments for four years, funded by a loan at the same bank. Judge James Foley accepted the arrangement noting its unusual nature.
Geri Gronau, a 13 year old from Route 5, Wichita area, recovered from a severe head injury after a November fall. Now learning to walk and talk again, she attends speech and PE classes while continuing home studies. She won first place at Harvey County Fair for a breeding ewe and awaits her 14th birthday, with a bedroom soon to be finished and a hopeful Christmas ahead.
The nomination deadline for Woman of the Year has been extended to Jan 7 1978. The Kansan notes fewer nominations this year and hopes the extension prompts more entries. A nomination form appears on page 6A for readers to submit a candidate with category qualifications.
