The Newton Jaycees announce the annual distinguished service awards banquet for January 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Heights Methodist Church. Verne Koch, awards chair, says the event will honor the DSA winner, outstanding young farmer, educator, and protector, with eligibility expanding to women under 36. Clarence Wesely of the Wichita Chamber will speak. nominations are open at the Newton Chamber of Commerce.

Amtrak Lone Star Limited crashed into an oil truck near Ponca City in dense fog. Engineer E R Hulse and Fireman R C Young were killed, 110 passengers aboard escaped with injuries as flames engulfed the scene and witnesses reported limited visibility and a massive explosion.

Okerberg Named to Harvey County Agency on Aging
County commissioners appoint W. M. Okerberg as a Newton area representative for the Harvey County Agency on Aging. They seek two outside Newton volunteers and ask calls to Mel Gradert for interest. A supplemental contract adds $12,000 in Title III funds to the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging budget. The board also approves two recommendations from Thomas L. Gibson: a $500 training funds agreement and a $2,000 restricted training funds purchase.

Swine Flu Clinic Sees 158 More Vaccinated at Harvey County
158 more people received swine flu shots at a walk in clinic of the Harvey County Health Dept. The final walk in inoculation event is set for Wednesday 1 to 6 p.m. at the county courthouse. Shots require two weeks to become effective. Frederic Remington High novice debaters won the MKS title at Hillsboro with a 7 1 record. Allen was top speaker in the event, first year for the Remington team.

Firefighters responded to a Virginia Sears residence for an overheated furnace caused by a faulty thermostat. A car in Newton High School lot suffered theft of a console and six eight track tapes valued at $60. A 17 year old was arrested for buying whisky. another 16 year old was not held. Sheriff reports theft of 40 fence posts and 100 yards of wire valued at $60. Births record a Hesston couple's son at Axtell Hospital. Animal control lists nine puppies to be adopted with a $6 kennel fee. County court convicts Ardell Race of DWI with $150 fine and six months license restriction. A stop sign summons is dismissed.
