Craven's I Heard the Owl Call My Name and Again Calla the Owl
Margaret Craven's two slender books, the novel I Heard the Owl Call My Name and the memoir Again Calla the Owl, link a young priest's life with Kwakiutl culture. Born 1901 in Helena, Craven turned to journalism before writing fiction, drawing on Kingcome and other west coast inlets for vivid, compassionate portraits of Indigenous rituals and beliefs. The works chart a fading civilization and the author’s own emergence as a keeper of past voices.
