Dynamometer keeps Barrett in front of high speed boats

Tom Barrett operates Precision Racing Marine at 434 St. Market St. Frederick, running the only national dynamometer that measures horsepower directly from the engine shaft. The device tests racing engines up to 120 hp, charging $40 per hour, with Barrett aiming to expand into gasoline sales soon. Barrett, a 20 year veteran racer known as Captain Weird, has over 800 trophies and top speeds near 80 mph, while recalling mentor Gary Hilson who died in a recent race in Delaware Water Gap.
