U S Closes Nicaro Nickel Plant in Cuba
The United States announced the closure of the Nicaro nickel plant in Oriente Province Cuba, with suspension effective immediately. The State Department cited harassment by the Castro regime and looming Cuban taxes as reasons while noting possible new export controls on Cuba. The plant had a $110 million valuation and employed many locals, contributing to the Cuban economy over 15 years.

U S Plans Expanded Cuba Export Controls and Cuba Departures
The State Department said new export restrictions may broaden limits to Cuba and the Dominican Republic, targeting jeeps, trucks, and repair parts. It advised dependents of U S citizens in Cuba to depart when possible as Castro’s government threatens protection of U S channels. Officials estimate 3 500 to 4 000 U S citizens in Cuba with 2 000 dependents, and only limited plans to repatriate Guantanamo personnel. The Navy base hosts 140 officers, 1 400 enlisted, 2 990 dependents, plus 230 civilian workers and 371 dependents.
