Barry And Schley Busts By Sculptor Keyser
Ernest W. Kerst, a Baltimore born sculptor who died in Rome, created the William B. Barry bust in Frederick and the admiral Winfield Scott Schley bust in Annapolis. Keyser, studied at the Maryland Institute, gained fame for the Harper Memorial in Canada. The Barry memorial fronts the Maryland School for the Deaf, a project inspired by Barry’s push to found the school after several of his children died in an epidemic. He helped establish the institution in 1868 and served on the board of Visitors from 1869, eventually as president until his death in 1906.
