The New York market opened with uneven strength as rail shares, led by New Haven, dampened gains. Early gains in motors and accessories faded as traders booked profits, with a late sell off and slow support. William E. Parke of Chester County presented a petition to the county court requesting an investigation into the death of Miss Hoey and into conduct of the coroner's jury and those in contact with jurors. The inquest found she died at Rogers' country home on September 11 by unknown persons, and Parke suggested homicide may be indicated.
Sheriff John A. Shipley hunted a robber who blasted a flashlight at Ernest Shipley, a middle aged carrier, and stole more than 300 dollars from his pocket as he stood at his Bird Hill area home. The incident occurred after a shot outside the house. The suspect fled.
Atlantic City Post No 2 Drum and Bugle Corps members return trip from St Louis after attending the American Legion national convention. About sixty members, with Legionnaires from other New Jersey towns, dined in Frederick Sunday, having stopped there September 20 en route.
T J L Wiles of Brad dock district exhibited two mammoth sweet potatoes in Newa Post OM. He believes they may set a record for Frederick county. One potato weighed 4 pounds 3 ounces and the other weighed 4 pounds minus one ounce. Wiles raised 16 bushels of potatoes.
Dr. Homer E. Tabler, chairman of the State Roads Commission, reports Maryland must use most available funds to match federal money, enlarging the total for highway work. He cites bond sales, special treasury funds, and forthcoming federal grants as sources, with a three year program totaling about 14.46 million dollars.
Debris from the former ice cream plant owned by Harry L. Ebert is cleared as a small building at Market Street near Fifth undergoes razing. Emanuel Rahm of York Nebraska claims to have built the world’s smallest electric motor, a fly weight device with 58 parts mostly 14 carat gold.

Bel Air Sept 30 AP State's Attorney D Paul McNabb asked the State Board of Mental Hygiene to order a sanity examination of Ken Call Howell alleged son of Albert Howell. Howell is indicted for murder in the first degree and set for trial Oct 7. His counsel Senator Harold Coburn requested the examination. Howell's body was found in woods near Havre de Grace after he was reported missing from Baltimore. He had $4 stolen and was strangled.
Gunmen in two cars raided the University State Bank on Chicago's South Side injuring four people, including two women and two men. A guard was reported to have fired toward the suspects as they fled.
A tenement fire and subsequent explosion caused multiple fatalities among residents. Authorities investigate the blaze and family members mourn losses as emergency crews worked to extinguish flames and secure the scene.
A three story Chicago tenement fire and explosion killed eight people including four children from the Cappella family and the Grasso family. Frank Vitale the grocery store owner denied knowledge of the blaze despite admitting $3000 insurance on the store. Vitale was questioned at Maxwell Street station. Firefighters worked to rescue twenty occupants as flames gutted the building and several survivors leaped from windows.
More than 200 pupils and five teachers evacuated safely as Calvert High School burned to the ground. Fire began in the basement. five engines from North East Elkton Newark Rising Sun and Oxford failed to stop the blaze due to water shortage. The one story brick school was a total loss.
