Assateague Island Bridge to Be Named Verrazzano Memorial
The Assateague Island bridge will be dedicated October 2 in honor of Giovanni da Verrazzano. Maryland officials approved the naming in May following local civic sponsorship by Worcester County groups and the Verrazzano Festival proceeds benefiting Ocean City emergency services. Spelling disputes arose between two rr and one z versus two rrs and two rs, with authorities citing sources from Italian and Florentine archives.
