Rain soaked the Frederick Fair into its third day with attendance down due to waterlogged tents. Weather forecasts predict rain to end tomorrow. City and county offices and all public schools in the county will be closed tomorrow for the fair. All school children will be free from classes awaiting events.
Barbara Ausherman a 15 year old Walkerville High School student won the 4 H dairy judge and presented an angel food cake to Governor J Millard Tawes on Governor's Day at the fair The governor complimented her and jokingly said she would make a fine wife later adding a quick kiss Attendance over two days and weather notes are included along with 4 H winners and a colorful secretary John Best in a red outfit at the secretary's office
Mrs Mary B Bryson won a court fight against the Maryland reapportionment act which invalidated her candidacy for Republican state senator from Carroll Frederick district However no GOP candidate has been certified for the Nov 8 election pending an appeal to the state Court of Appeals Judge Matthew Evans ruled part of the 1965 redistricting measure unconstitutional Evans issued an injunction barring state and county election officials from certifying winners in Frederick Carroll primary while the case proceeds Bryson said she would continue campaigning including Frederick Fair and visits today and Friday
Washington AP Rep Carlton R Sickles conceded Mahoney won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Maryland but refused to endorse him. An unofficial tally showed Mahoney leading by 1,629 votes with Baltimore City machines pending. Mahoney urged party unity, saying race issues did not justify breaking with fellow Democrats.
Lest er G. Maddox, a segregationist running a shoestring campaign, captured the Democratic nomination for governor in Georgia. He decisively defeated Ellis G. Arnall, former governor, in the runoff after Arnall led a six man field two weeks earlier. Maddox, a furniture merchant who quit the cafeteria business rather than serve Negroes, upsets Georgia’s moderate course.
Frederick City plans to seek federal funding for the Monocacy interceptor sewer and plant improvements. City engineer Robert J. Rothenhoefer expects two 50 percent grants, for the disposal plant and the sewer line, with costs estimated at 300000 to 500000 and 4200000 dollars respectively. Engineers from Whitman, Reynardt and Associates will prepare a report this winter, with bids sought soon and construction needed by spring to connect to Walkersville by September 1968.
Hurricane Inez battered the Barahona Peninsula with 160 mph winds and high tides from Santo Domingo to Beata. Weather warnings for severe flooding and heavy rains spread across Hispaniola as the storm leaves 23 dead, 500 injured, and 10,000 homeless on Guadeloupe.
Wickes Lumber Company office on Md 355 was broken into by thieves who forced a window, used hammers to open a metal safe, and absconded with about $400 in cash and over $200 in merchandise. Vending machines, two chain saws and an electric drill were also stolen. A past August break in and a 1964 Wickes theft are noted. no suspects or arrests reported.
Detroit reports its new meter maids are impartial. Councilman Rogell says police officers told him a meter maid ticketed a squad car in a no parking zone while officers were answering a call. The maids were hired to relieve patrolmen for other duties.
National Guardsmen used shoot to kill orders as rioting erupted in San Francisco amid heat of 95 degrees with 1 200 guardsmen patrolling Negro districts and 1 300 on standby in response to the death of a Black youth by a white officer. Police and guardsmen clashed with snipers arson looting and brick throwing in Hunt's Point Bayview and Fillmore districts. 42 wounded no deaths reported.
The stock market slipped irregularly in early trading with moderate volume. Du Pont recovered more than 2 points and Motorola rose to 112 on 3,100 shares, continuing to influence recent market setbacks.
U S forces reported 970 casualties in the week, with 142 killed and 825 wounded, plus 3 missing or captured, the highest weekly toll to date. Vietnamese losses totaled 098 dead and 280 wounded, as Allied forces overran Viet Cong camps and fought near the DMZ in operations including Prairie. The U S strength reached 315,000, near the South Vietnamese total of 317,000.
President Juan Carlos Ongania declared those who hijacked a 48 passenger airliner and forced it to land in the Falkland Islands will stand trial. He called Wednesday’s action a serious uprising and vowed full force of the law against the responsible parties and instigators.
