McCardell outlines PE needs to meet 80s demand

PE executive vice president John M. McCardell told about 50 Lions at Cozy Restaurant that financial and environmental constraints limit new generation capacity. He warned of future "negative days" when PE cannot meet demand, requiring expensive outside power, and noted regulatory hurdles and permit challenges. He plans to retire in 1981, just before anticipated power crunch. The Thurmont Lions Club officers and directors were listed.

Hughes Courts Montgomery for Maryland Governor Bid

Democratic candidate Harry Hughes opened his campaign in Montgomery County with a breakfast and press session, pitching tax relief and restrained spending. He contrasted his plan with J Glenn Bealls, urging zero based budgeting and targeted relief while predicting a possible 10 million year end surplus by 1979. He warned Bealls proposals could threaten Maryland triple A rating and pledged major top level changes if elected.

Mathias backs gas price bill amid criticism as bureaucratic scheme

Sen. Charles Mathias praised a bill lifting federal price controls on natural gas while calling the compromise measure the most bureaucratic scheme in years. He voted for the legislation despite labeling its features problematic, noting its aim to bolster confidence in the dollar and support energy policy.
