Degrees by the dozen on S40 week
A Life magazine feature by William Brinkley profiles Louis Martin and his wife Irene Polk of the Eastern Shore near Princess Anne who, with their 12 children, sent all through college while Martin earned about 80 dollars weekly. The Martins built a farm and raised pigs while Irene managed food and savings for schooling, producing multiple college graduates and three master’s degrees. The story highlights character through hard work and self improvement, with Martins’ career as Maryland’s first Negro farm agent and community impact noted.
