Montgomery officials split over 20 day longer school year
Montgomery County officials weigh a 20 day extension to the school year amid cost concerns and mixed views on benefits. Teachers union president Mark Simon condemns the plan as a quick fix and cites the need for better teaching quality and learning focus. Superintendent Harry Pitt’s associate Carl Smith supports longer years but warns of large costs, while board members caution it would be financially risky and favor alternatives like expanded summer programs and early childhood education. Del Counihan endorses the educational value but notes the fiscal strain.
