Reagan faces uphill battle to veto harsher South Africa sanctions

Local youth sobered by D C move to raise drinking age

District of Columbia raises its drinking age to 21 affecting area students. Troopers will patrol Beltway and Prince George’s County to deter underage drinking and driving. Frederick County SAT scores rise again above state and national levels

Frederick County students posted composites near 944 with 496 math and 448 verbal, as average scores climb for a fifth straight year. Supervisor Stephen Hess notes more test takers, 671 students, widened the gap from 1985 while national and state scores inch up modestly. He cautions SAT reflects college-bound segment, not overall school performance.

Reward reaches $3,000 in murder investigation

A reward for information leading to the killer of Jane Marie Prichard, 28, has grown to 3,000 with donations from Barnesville, Boyds and Clarksburg. Police in Delaware seek a white man aged 29 to 30 seen near Blackbird State Forest on Sept. 20, when Prichard was shot during a master's degree research visit.

Frederick Post and News lift home delivery price Oct 1

The Frederick Post and The News announce a price increase due to higher paper and delivery costs. Daily home delivery rises from 15 to 18 cents, with mail delivery within the primary area up to 52 5 per month and outside area up to 85 per month. Single copy price remains 25 cents.
