Army Manpower Needs To Be Probed By House Panel
The House Armed Services Committee announced a sweeping inquiry into the Army uses of manpower, training needs, and how to meet them. It will explore why many draftees are rejected and estimate how many American troops may be required to guard Europe against Communist aggression. Col. Daniel O. Omer said current 19 through 25 year olds could supply the needed personnel if rules are relaxed, including drafting childless married men and World War II veterans. He projected a 3,000,000 man army within those limits and warned draft boards may have to send 2,400,000 by next June 30 to reach the goal, with maintenance at about 100,000 monthly thereafter. Employers were advised to reserve critical jobs for older men and utilize those rejected for WWII service, while expecting 26 to 35 year olds to remain available and preventing drafting those over 35 except in emergencies.
