Rain Damps Kids Day Fun At Great Frederick Fair

Despite a light rain the Great Frederick Fair drew families on Kid's Day with educational displays and safety booths. Karen Hawes and her 8 year old twins looked at rabbits while Safe Kids Coalition used a remote Buster bus to teach safety. Deputies handed out crime prevention tips and safety books in memory of Sgt. Ed Lookingbill as rain gear became the day’s attire. Local residents enjoyed a day off school with activities from wildflower info to veterans outreach and news of a Bowl-A-Thon on Oct 18.

Georges rumbles toward Gulf Coast

Hurricane Georges barrels toward the Gulf Coast after plowing through the Caribbean and Florida Keys. It killed more than 300 in the Caribbean and 10 in Florida, with power outages and extensive damage in the 120 mile chain of islands. At 5 a.m. its center moved west north west about 460 miles southeast of New Orleans with 105 mph winds. A hurricane watch stretched from St. Marks Florida to Morgan City Louisiana.

Frederick's golf course posts first profit in 1998

Frederick's Clustered Spires Golf Course operated in the black for the first time in fiscal year 1998 thanks to outstanding course conditions full golf services and affordable prices. The course generated 19842 in net income paying 84037 in admission and amusement taxes benefiting the city general fund by 62238 while the state kept the difference for admin fees. Public works director Fred Eisenhart Jr credited quality service and course maintenance with attracting over 50000 customers and noted ongoing improvements including pro shop merchandise youth programs trees fencing new carts snack bar and driving range enhancements. The department took over in 1995 after a 200000 annual loss, and the report notes bond principal and interest on a 4.75 million bond. Continued on Page A-20.

Firefighters named Montgomery County Firefighters of the Year

Frederick County men Martin Fuller and Joseph Fuller II were honored for their off duty rescue attempt at Lake Singanore on June 7. The two Montgomery County career firefighters braved 57 degree water to try to save two drowned teenagers, earning public recognition at a ceremony Friday night.

Whitecoat veterans reunite at Frederick church vigil

Nearly 400 people from across the United States gathered at the Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church for a three day Project Whitecoat reunion. From 1954 to 1973 about 2309 Adventists volunteered as subjects for military medical research. Ruben Marquina traveled from Los Angeles to attend, noting it was a special way to serve country and humanity. Chaplain Felbush praised blending service to God and nation, while Col. Gerald Parker led remarks on military medical research.
