Steam Locomotives May Return To Railroads In The 21st Century
A Popular Mechanics feature reports plans to revive steam power in American railroading. ACE leader Ross Rowland Jr. tests No. 614 and envisions a hybrid steam system with higher efficiency, lower fuel costs, and computerized controls. Options include Mark 1 prototypes and retrofitting diesels to steam-electric designs. Sierra Railroad No. 3 remains a Hollywood favorite with credits across Petticoat Junction and Gunsmoke.
