Expert says runoff reduction may not stop fish kills
Annapolis experts caution that cutting farm and poultry runoff may not guarantee avoiding Pfiesteria outbreaks. Donald Boesch of the University of Maryland notes a strong but not conclusive link between nutrients and the toxic microorganism, urging broader scientific input.

Study calls for stronger Bay pollution protections
A 12 year University of Maryland study at the Wye Research and Education Center finds farmer conservation efforts fall short. Researchers Russell Brinsfield and Kenneth Staver report about one third of nitrogen fertilizer remains after harvest on two 20 acre cornfields along the Wye River, with phosphorus also washing off despite no till practices. The findings link nutrient runoff to Chesapeake Bay degradation and potential algae blooms.
