Washington dispatch reports a coast-to-coast pre-dawn check of about 500 slaughter houses in more than 50 cities. Price Enforcement Director Edward FP Morgan said hundreds of packers would be inspected as regional offices assist, examining records, scales, invoices, and cattle weights to enforce the beef price control law.
Lt. Col. James E. Bartgis Jr names nine promotions in the reserve 302nd Signal Aviation Construction Battalion. Eight veterans of WWII are listed, four with the 29th Division. Promotions include Starr to Warrant Officer Junior Grade and Newton to Master Sergeant. Three Frederick companies active. a recruiting drive underway and a plan to activate a new company in Sykesville.
James B. E. Olson, ex U S alcohol tax collector in New York, admitted soliciting printing work from taxpayers and drawing over 45000 from American Lithofold Corp. of St. Louis while on the federal payroll. He denied the claim as a shakedown and affirmed it was proper to engage with firms paying taxes to him.
General Electric unveiled a cobalt based device to treat deep seated cancer using radioactivity like high energy x rays. The apparatus has radiation power equal to the world’s entire known radium supply and would cost about $18,000, vastly cheaper than radium. Officials said it would enable many hospitals to use high energy radiation therapy, though the unit’s price was not disclosed.

Tokyo dispatch reports a 50 minute session between allied liaison officers and communist counterparts at Kaesong ended abruptly as Col Chang Chun San refused a proposal by UN’s Col Andrew J. District Forest Supervisor Herman Toms announced completion of a 100 foot fire lookout tower at Foxville on the old 47 foot site. In Baltimore on September 25, Charles Green a 53 year old numbers writer on trial alleged Patrolman James E. Smith took protection money and urged him to start numbers writing. Judge Joseph Sherbow ordered a grand jury probe into the accusation as Smith, on sick leave, appeared at the State's Attorney's Office. Patrolman Leroy Moody testified Green told Smith during the raid that he would go to jail if Moody did. Green was arrested after plainclothes officers offered him a 90 cent bet to write numbers.
A former Army veterinarian from Maryland faced a second sentence in a meat fraud case in Newark. Dr. John F. Jones of Easton revised his plea to guilty of conspiring to defraud the government of 500000 dollars on Army meat contracts. He inspected meat for the Quartermaster Corps and was indicted with American Packing Corporation and eight others for selling four to five million pounds of low grade meat as top grade. Grunstein & Sons was fined and sentenced for related fraud. Judge Meaney did not set a sentencing date for Jones.
Congressman J. Glenn Beall visited the county today and met friends in the city without issuing a statement about a possible 1952 Republican primary bid for United States Senate. He talked with locals and renewed acquaintances, with no definite decision expected before the election year.

Temperatures rise Thursday and Friday then cool again over the weekend with averages near late September normals. Afternoon highs run 70 to 75 with early morning lows in the mountains near 40s and in eastern and southern regions near 50s.
