Funds allocated for home buyers boost county aid

Frederick County allocates 4.7 million for first time home buyer aid under the states CDA program. IRB funds totaling 4.3 million plus 2.3 million housing bonds raise total housing bond funds to 6.7 million allocated among MPP HDP and HELP. Group seeks halt to biological research at Fort Detrick

Frederick resident Dr. Neil H. Levitt joins the Foundation on Economic Trends in seeking an injunction to halt all biological research at Fort Detrick and other facilities. The suit cites missing virus stocks including a Chikungunya vaccine, alleges inadequate lab security, and questions Army handling of the matter. The Army says no hazards were found and cites high standards and security.

D C Council approves 21 drinking age with grandfather clause

The District of Columbia Council passed emergency measures to raise the drinking age to 21, adding a grandfather clause for those who turn 18 before Oct 1. The vote was 10 to 10.3, with rapid action needed to meet an Oct 1 deadline and avoid losing highway funds.

Adolescent pregnancy problem in county

In Frederick County an estimated 300 to 400 teens aged 10 to 19 give birth each year though records are incomplete. The Interagency Committee on Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting formed a year ago to unite four major agencies and address contraception abortion and adoption through cooperation.
