Hood College begins its 43rd scholastic year with a large freshman class and extended orientation activities. Registration for upperclassmen starts Thursday while a formal opening program includes assemblies, campus tours, health and placement tests, and talks by faculty and administrators.
The County Commissioners awarded contracts for Montevue and the jail for October November and December. Awardees include M. W Stately of Woodsboro for meal, Hershberger’s Bakery for bread, Thomas Kemp for dry goods, Pelton Kelty for flour and feed, and FV Stau and Sem for groceries.
A massive crowd gathered in Manheim and at Chicques Church of the Brethren for the joint funerals of Rev. Mr Miller and his wife Mrs Miller. Rev Miller died at 89 after pneumonia and heart illness, his wife had died days earlier from pneumonia. Interment followed at the nearby cemetery. Survivors include two children and three grandchildren. Members from Frederick attended the services including local families and friends.
Max Baer weighed 210 1 2 pounds and Joe Louis 199 1 2 pounds at the official weigh-in for their 15 round heavyweight title clash. More than 3 000 fight fans gathered outside the State Athletic Commission offices in New York as Baer arrived late with manager Ancil Hoffman and Jack Dempsey, while Louis entered early and waited nearly an hour.
Dr David G Everhart Sr has been appointed a member of the commission for the right of way department of the State Roads Commission. The appointment takes effect October 1 and was announced to Governor Nice and Dr Homer E Tabler. Everhart, a long time local dentist, played an active part for Republicans in the last state election.
The Serv-U Save-U Association held its regular meeting to plan the fourth annual cooking school. The event runs October 22 to 25 from 2 to 4 pm with Mrs. Mary A. Ruch as demonstrator and free classes open to all. Prizes will be awarded and the booth at the Fashion Show will offer free coffee and doughnuts. A Carroll County group invitation was accepted for October 7, and the next meeting is scheduled for September 36.

Bel Air Maryland Sept 24 1AP A Bel Air National Guard company was ordered to disband after a violence scare at the jail. Major General M Jon A Record of the Maryland Guard announced the action following a report from Major W B Harwood. State police were on duty overnight and a grand jury was convened for Thursday.

About 60 persons attended the Fall meeting of the Maryland Classis of the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Glade Reformed Church Walkersville led by Rev Nelson C Brown. Reports on foreign missions and finances were presented by officials including Rev George K Ely and Rev Guy P Bready with committee updates and the president presiding.
