Darren Remsberg, 17, of Jefferson, won senior and overall fitting and showing in Holstein and then supreme champion at the 4-H dairy show at the Great Frederick Fair. He plans to start college next year and noted 4-H taught responsibility and organization while preparing his clean, well-handled animal. Other breed champions and junior and intermediate showmanship winners from several local 4-H members were announced, with judges Mike Sager, Mary Shank Creek and Christy Wood assessing the dairy show.

Dung from Great Frederick Fair finds buyers daily

Each day during the fair about 3 000 animals produce tons of manure at the Frederick County event. Chief of maintenance Butch Stitely says a Pennsylvania trucker, Earl Keys, hauls away a load every morning to sell to nurseries and mushroom farms. Horse manure nourishes mushrooms while remaining manure goes to nurseries. After the fair, gardeners may collect leftovers. Estimated animals include 344 beef cattle, 735 dairy cattle, 307 goats, 464 sheep, 375 pigs, 920 poultry, 65 horses.
