Barnes backs Lebanon compromise War Powers extension
Washington Rep Michael Barnes of Maryland lent support to a compromise authorizing 18 more months of Marine deployment in Lebanon under the War Powers Act. He argued Congress must assert its war powers while acknowledging the president’s position, noting the extended period aims to avoid politicizing the issue. Senator Charles McC. Matas Jr. remained undecided on backing the resolution.
