Rail strike widens as N W pickets Chessie yards in Maryland

Striking Norfolk and Western workers expand protests to Chessie System yards in Hagerstown and Cumberland Maryland as a federal judge halts cross pickets. Judge Joseph Young issues a restraining order restricting B&O and Western Maryland employees from forming new picket lines and limits union rail clerks from approaching yard entrances within 150 feet. He declines to order workers back or broaden limits, with a hearing set for Monday. About 1,000 Chessie System workers remain off duty, joined by earlier strikers as N W pickets move in from Roanoke and Pittsburgh.
