The steamer Juniata bound from Boston to Baltimore and Norfolk was rammed by the five masted schooner Harwood Palmer 30 miles off Cape Cod in dense fog. Six passengers and two officers were injured. one passenger, J. W. Johnson, suffered a broken leg and head injuries. The Palmer appeared undamaged and both vessels stayed at the scene until daylight. The Juniata returned to Boston for repairs as officials investigated fault.
