Fire Ravages Belle Ellen Mine. several feared dead
At Belle Ellen near Blocton in Bibb county a fire broke out two hours after miners entered No 3 of the Bessemer Land and Improvement company. About 200 men were working when gas and smoke trapped five men and possibly two or three others. Rescue parties worked all day but five miners are confirmed dead and others remain missing. The blaze, started by an overhead steam pipe igniting gas, continued burning as searchers checked the list of workers.
