Insects Grow Resistance to Plant Defenses
Scientists note that plant compounds defending against butterfly larvae can backfire as moths develop mutations that overcome these chemicals. The article discusses how insect mutations may render toxins distasteful or nutritionally ineffective, illustrating evolutionary responses to plant defenses.
Plant-Insect Arms Race Drives Rapid Evolution
The text describes a cycle where adapted insects feed on protected plants, allowing mutant strains to multiply and form new groups with the same adaptation. Protected plants then multiply and evolve new groups until predators adapt to counter their chemical defenses.
