Garden Club of Frederick Meeting and Trips

The Garden Club of Frederick met September 13 at 11 am at Mrs. J Harold Hooper s Walkersville home. A luncheon followed the business meeting led by president Mrs W Jarboe Grove. Miss Grace E Lippy spoke on Silent Spring and her ties to Rachel Carson. Dr Jane D McCarrell reviewed the book. A October 11 bus trip to Towson s Hampton Historic Site and luncheon followed.

Zontians Hear Hallor Best On Frederick Schools

Guest speaker Hallor Best of the Frederick County Board of Education spoke at the Zonta Club of Frederick dinner meeting held at the Francis Scott Key Hotel. President Lloyd C. Smith presided. Grace Miller read the Collect and Hilda Crogan introduced the speaker. Best urged open discussion and citizen awareness of School Board duties, citing the six-member board’s responsibility for public education and procedures for appointment. He covered topics including school building stock plans, hiring a district architect, operating budgets, anticipated indebtedness, overcrowding, teacher student ratio, and dropout causes and solutions. The next meeting is a September picnic at the Hotel Frederick.

Volunteers Aid Cornell Fund as 51 Million Unrestricted Gifts Reported

Cornell University received 51,335,092 in unrestricted gifts during the 1962 63 academic year. Turkey Dinner Aims to Boost U S Food Exports

In Cologne Germany the United States hosted a nine day international food fair opening Saturday to counter the chicken war. A turkey dinner attended by over 100 journalists showcased U S food products to spur demand in West Germany where tariffs slashed chicken imports and sales. The event seeks to sustain U S exports as the dispute over poultry remains unresolved.

NIH Specialist Presentation Of Awards At FNIH Meeting

The Frederick Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary held its annual fall meeting at Calvary Methodist Church with a NIH Public Relations director Ruth Dudley presenting on NIH work. Awards honored hours of service, including 3,000 hours for Mrs. Clyde W. Roney Sr. and multiple others for 750, 500, and 200 hour levels. The program featured musical selections by the Ladies Trio and remarks on NIH research in neurological and mental retardation fields.

Woman Named by State Council Appointed Trail Blazers Co Chair

Mrs. George E Poole a Natomoa Council 38 Pocahontas member was named co chair of the Maryland Trail Blazers program at a Red Men Hall meeting. She replaces Mrs Margaret Swanner who resigned due to other duties. About 65 Maryland area council members attended including Great Pocahontas for the state. The meeting also covered plans to initiate new members of Michaels Council in Salisbury and Martinsburg W Va. Engaged Mr and Mrs Paul McSmith announce the engagement of Deborah Ann to Pvt Ronald W Zecher. Deborah is a Middletown High School 1963 graduate and nursing student. Ronald is a 1961 Middletown graduate serving in the National Guard at Fort Knox. No wedding date set.

Catoctin Duplicate Bridge Club Open Pair Championship

The annual open pair championship at the Catoctin Duplicate Bridge Club was held Wednesday evening at Cosy Regarium in Thurmont. Thirteen players participated with Mrs. Helen Rees directing. Frederick Orchestra Plans 1964 65 Concert Season

The Frederick Orchestra outlines its 1964 65 concert season with 8 15 p.m. performances at Hood College Hall.
