European dominance in space business challenges US launch firms
US rocket builders McDonnell Douglas General Dynamics and Martin Marietta push into commercial launches after the shuttle era shift. Arianespace now controls over half the market, with 29 satellites launched from Kourou and 34 more on order. The competition from Europe China and the Soviet Union threatens US industry while firms seek broader customers including broadcasters and governments. The goal is to demonstrate reliable launches to win private and international business.
