Tractor pull kicks off Frederick Fair with heavyweights in action

About 3,800 spectators watched the third annual Frederick Fair Tractor Pull as 12,000 pound loads were tugged down a 300-foot dirt track. The Hoff and Hughes team claimed two of five firsts, with 1500 horsepower engines and alcohol fuel, amid varied engines and sled weight tests. Maryland lottery numbers followed with 228 drawn in the Numbers Game.

Christoff sentence upheld by Maryland appeals panel

A three judge panel in Annapolis upheld former Frederick Community College dean Patrick L. Christoff’s two years and a day sentence for illegally obtaining 156000 in state aid. The panel found no basis to reduce the sentence, following a six day trial.

Harlan Industries of Indianapolis plans a 1.3 million laboratory animal plant on five acres in Ballenger Creek Frederick County. The project would produce 20 000 to 25 000 rats and mice weekly, with 40 to 60 staff by 1981, and relies on a Maryland financing loan with state and county approval. Frederick County vows plan with limited state school funds

Frederick County school leaders warned of delays to 10 proposed $12.6 million projects as the IAC said only $4.5 million of a $10.8 million request would be funded. Superintendent Gordon M. Anderson urged state lobbying to secure more SAC funds amid rising enrollment and growth, noting Howard County as a faster-growth area while Western Middle School and North Frederick elements face jeopardy.

Advertising staff of the Frederick News-Post are named winners in four divisions of the 1978 Maryland Delaware District of Columbia Press Association contest. Sne Ed Mull wins first for local display advertising in division A. Lisa Hostetter takes first for local display color reproduction. The display ad staff earns second for advertising section and the classified staff second for national display color reproduction. Awards will be given Sept 24 at Ocean City during the 69th annual summer conference.

Crawford recalls hellish prison experience in Russia

Westminster native and International Harvester sales manager Francis J Crawford, held in Russia, described his imprisonment as hell. He told attorney Herbert Rollins in Frederick that he could not discuss prison details, and criticized the currency charges as trumped up. He noted foreign receipts, a trial overseen by one judge and two lay judges, and said the verdict was politically predestined.
