German Loss Heavy On Somme Front
On the Somme the German lines suffered heavy losses in counter attacks north and south of the river. French forces maintained gains near Clery and Berny and encircled Deniecourt, taking 1200 prisoners and ten machine guns. The Thirty eighth regiment and Eleventh division suffered massive losses. British advances south of the Somme included taking Danube trench and Mouquet farm and gains toward Courcelette. The French extended their front toward Barleux and Vermandovillers, repelling German counterattacks.
