Bolivia junta agrees to return of democracy
Bolivia's ruling junta will reconvene Congress and restore democratic government after a nationwide strike. General Celso Guido Vildoso Calderon said power transfer will be orderly and autonomous, not a result of pressure. The Central Obrera Boliviana led mass strikes affecting transport, banks, offices, and businesses, with regional actions and miners joining a push for reforms and a return to democracy. The armed forces plan to reconvene the Congress elected in 1980, which had been dissolved after the coup the following month.
