The first light frost since earlier in the year was reported as temperatures dipped into the low 30s. Unionville's station logged 33 degrees with frost but no plant fatalities. other low spots and highlands saw frost without damage.
City police logged a series of minor crashes Thursday evening with no injuries. Drivers included Lawrence Trai and David Schrodel on West South Street, Richard Moore and Raymond Sanbower at South and Jefferson, Florence Culler and Frederick Bowser at Bareet and East Church, and Lawrence Aldridge and Grover Beall on South Market Street. damages ranged from 35 to 500 dollars and no charges were filed in most cases. Officer Paul Mossburg and Officer Donald Tracey investigated.
Three county residents were slightly injured at 7 10 a m when a 1952 Studebaker driven by John R Kegley rammed the rear of a 1951 Pontiac driven by Mrs Mary L Miss on Ballenger Creek Road. All were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital. Kegley charged with following too closely.
A county youth was fined $50 and costs after pleading guilty to trespassing on the premises of a Route 40 restaurant following a warning to stay away. The case involved Raymond Delano Sitter and a September 6 incident at the Slack Bar. The magistrate urged county cleanup of alcohol sales to minors and warned of probation and possible House of Correction time for future offenses.
Frederick County plans a two day teachers conference at West Frederick Junior High School beginning October 7. About 559 educators and consultants will join 22 groups to discuss guidance and optimum pupil growth with speakers from Illinois Baltimore and Pennsylvania.
Mrs Himes was unanimously endorsed for Western Maryland District chair of the United Democratic Women’s Clubs at a Baltimore meeting. James H Hahn presided as Maryland state chairman. Mrs Hahn ends her two year term in January. Mrs Mary Wilson of Baltimore named as new state chairman. Maryland now has 23 delegates to the national convention, six of whom will be women. Other attendees included Mrs Myrtle Young Mrs Murray Fox Mrs Elizabeth Knill Mrs Helen McKenzie Mrs Caroline McGill and Mrs Avis.
Edwin F. Nikirk Frederick County states attorney pleaded innocent to three counts of Federal income tax evasion. He appeared before U. S. District Judge R. Dorsey Watkins and set Jan. 11 for trial with motions due by Oct. 13. Indictment says Nikirk underreported income for 1952 1953 and 1954.
A water shortage at the Point of Rocks Elementary School reservoir forced officials to use portable coolers to supply drinking water. The three room school drinks from a reservoir fed by three springs with a reported flow of about one gallon per minute, one spring having died. Maintenance teams from the education department inspected the system and planned to continue investigation.
The State Roads Commission announces a delay in blacktopping a three mile stretch of Route 46 from Amietam Creek bridge to the macadam highway east of Hagerstown. Patch work is prioritized this fall with full resurfacing postponed to next spring. The project involves 1,100 square feet of work on a historically hard to maintain road.
CAPE CANAVERAL FLAP Vanguard II launches aboard the last Vanguard rocket lifting a 100 pound satellite. NASA reports signals strong and clear as Vanguard II enters a 33 degree inclined orbit 2329 miles from Earth at apogee and 319 miles at perigee.
In Magistrate Byron W. Thompson's courtroom this morning two motorists were fined S15 and costs each for traffic violations. Leon R. Ridenour and L. V. Addison faced penalties for failure to stop and speeding on Route 40 and Route 30 respectively. An assault charge against Clarence W. Merica was withdrawn at the request of the complainant. The case against Billy R. Calice was continued to next Thursday night.
Alton Joe Bryant told the judge he was justified in listing four to six thousand dollars from his employer’s bank account to balance what he called unpaid wages. The court, however, sentenced him to prison despite his explanation.
Khrushchev plans a TV address at NBC in Washington before returning to the Soviet Union. The schedule includes stops in New York Los Angeles San Francisco and Des Moines and a weekend at Camp David with talks on Cold War issues. He will also attend a civic luncheon in Pittsburgh and meet President Eisenhower during the final days of his U S tour.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary announces a three stage disarmament proposal at the United Nations General Assembly. The plan aims to stop nuclear tests, reduce conventional arms and fissionable material, and pursue comprehensive disarmament under international control.
Seven community shows are planned in Frederick County with five new applications for premium awards. Walkersville FFA chapter will host a fair September 22, followed by Thurmont Grange September 25–26, Jefferson Grange October 5–6, Middletown Grange October 15–16, Ballenger Grange November 5–6.
Harry H. Haun of Tom Brook Virginia hit two large deer that jumped onto Route 340 near Petersville early this morning. One buck weighed over 20 pounds with a ten point rack, the other about 13 pounds with a six point rack. both were killed, and the tanker truck sustained 25 to 50 dollars in front-end damage. The hunter declined to take the deer and they were disposed of.
Several motorists faced license suspensions or revocations for motor violations per a Department of Motor Vehicles release. Names include Birchie Rowe, Dick Collings, Rodney Collings, and others with durations from 10 days to one month. Reissued licenses listed for Bowie, Reeder, and Young. An arrest for assault and battery followed a police complaint against Charles Bernard Fogle. Det. Set Vivian H. Boone Jr. made the arrest.
Tokyo AP reports Red China reshuffles top military leadership placing Mao Zedong loyalists in key posts. Peng Teh-huai ousted as defense minister. Lin Piao becomes defense minister and Lo Jui-ching named army chief of staff. Move seen as tightening control amid economic planning falters and opposition to the commune system.
In a New York speech at the Waldorf Astoria before 2000 industrial leaders Khrushchev lost his temper during a Q and A over press freedom and broadcasts. He warned he could walk out if questions interrupted and defended the Soviet Union's revolution and achievements.
Three autos in a mid afternoon pileup on Route 10 east of Hagerstown involved a Pittsburgh driver Julius A Cohen Washington resident E Wing Sang Dea and Frederick driver Thomas Glass. Dea’s car was hit from behind pushing it into Cohen’s vehicle. Includes unrelated notes on Alaska defense and a small fire at Princeton Shoe Store.
