Mississippi May End Public Schools To Keep Segregation
Jackson Miss Sept 16 A standby authority to abolish public schools to keep Negroes and whites separated cleared Mississippi legislature. The amendment to the state constitution goes to a vote on Dec 2. Gov Hugh White predicted ratification but opposition undercurrents exist. The House opposed using state funds to inform voters and some sponsors call it last resort measure to circumvent the Supreme Court ruling. The Senate gave final approval a week after the House. If ratified, LEAC will push a school building program while some members oppose funding without ratification. The measure may allow abolition of schools by two thirds vote or local option plans, and financing options include tuition for private schools. Walter Reuther and George Meany urged cooperation in an impartial investigation into union funds.
