The 124th Great Frederick Fair opened at 8 a.m. under partly sunny skies and cool temperatures. Indoor exhibits judged on Sunday are open for public viewing today and will stay open through Saturday night at the Frederick Fairgrounds. A tractor and truck pull is planned for tonight as part of the event.
Frederick County 4-H member Rebecca Horman saw her coconut layer cake sell for 2500 dollars to Bible Brothers Inc and R F Kline of Frederick during the Great Frederick Fair 4-H Cake Auction. The sale opened the 124th annual fair as Horman planned to break the 2000 dollar mark and leave 4-H with a bang.
Night of truck and tractor pulling at the Great Frederick County Fair saw national circuit contenders from Winchester and Mount Airy contend with local drivers on a dirt track. Winners included Greg Cooke and Chuck Chitwood, while safety measures and brutal engines underscored the sport's risk.
Mark Palmer told Soviets at Jurmala that Americans deeply resent the arrest of Nicholas Daniloff. He urged understanding of U S history and liberty as central to U S behavior. The exchange occurred during a five day private meeting seen as a step to improve U S Soviet relations.
At the Frederick Fair Monday night Edward O Hara of Adamstown baked the Junior Grand Champion cake. Auctioneer Bob Meunier oversaw the sale which brought 550 dollars paid by George B Delaplaime Jr of the Frederick News Post. Proceeds support Frederick County 4 H Camp and Activities Center.
Frederick County joined three Maryland counties in a six month drop in serious crime, while the state saw a seven percent rise. The UCR lists murder rape robbery aggravated assault breaking and entering theft and vehicle theft among the crimes. Breakings and enters fell from 478 to 354, robberies declined from 39 to 22, aggravated assaults rose slightly to 241, murders held at two, rapes up by one, and vehicle thefts increased by 15. Local police credit citizen involvement and a cooperative prosecutor’s office with the improvements. Time response also improved after patrol sharing began.

Dr Juana Amelia Hernandez, Cuban refugee and Hood College professor, named among the nation’s 50 outstanding faculty by the American Association of Higher Education for her work to expand Hispanic student support and foreign language education. Also cited are Leroy E. Giles and Lee Knefelkamp. The recognition, funded with Carnegie support, highlights her open teaching, leadership as language chair, and the Spanish House directorate, plus efforts to recruit and assist Hispanic students and strengthen campus culture.
