No-till farming benefits birdlife
Hal Crawford shares findings from an Iowa State University study showing no-till fields host more bird nests and greater mammal diversity than disked fields. In a 400 acre trial, no-till soy and corn areas supported 49 nests across species like Vesper and Grasshopper Sparrows, Meadowlarks, and pheasants, while conventional fields had few nests. The study, funded by federal and state agencies, notes benefits from residual vegetation and reduced nest destruction, with calls for further research and farmer input on local experiences.
