Two Cumberland Communists Arrested On Registration Charge
In Cumberland, Sept 16 two half acknowledged Communist party members William Boyd Coleman and Arthur M Schusterman were arrested in their apartment near the police station for violating the city ordinance requiring local Communists to register at City Hall. Bond set at 200 each awaiting hearings Monday before a police magistrate. The deadline for registration was last midnight as the ordinance passed unanimously in September with ten days to sign up. Police Chief Flynn said officers would weed out known Communists. Mease, active in the Progressive party, and Schusterman and Coleman sought an injunction from the Allegany County Circuit Court arguing the law unconstitutional. Associate Judge Henderson gave the city until Sept 30 to show cause, injunction pending meanwhile. Police Commissioner Long defended enforcement and the ordinance as proper. Those evading the law face up to 100 fine and 30 days imprisonment for distributing Communist literature.

Washington Daybook on Acheson Johnson and policy shifts
Washington observers note Acheson remains in his post with decisions cleared by the President. Johnson's stance on defense policy is criticized as unwise, while Byrnes’s prior influence is cited. A shift in Defense Department aides is anticipated, with Pace Matthewe and Finletter staying briefly and Griffith leaving. Brannan pursues a potential bid for Vice President, aided by labor and the Farmers Union, contingent on the Iowa Senate race. The Congressional Record remains the core source for Capitol Hill trivia and power maps.
