US proposes unified European defense force with German units
Secretary of State Dean Acheson told the North Atlantic Council that the United States seeks a one package plan for a Western Europe defense. It would include American and German contingents under a single international command with a dedicated staff and an overall commander. He urged all 12 NATO nations to raise and equip their own contingents to form a new international army as part of a revolutionary step in foreign policy toward Germany. American diplomats are optimistic the proposal will be accepted though details remain to be seen.
