Five Alarm Fire Destroys Zimmerman Barn in Walkersville
A five alarm blaze on the Trego Zimmerman farm on Stauffer Road destroyed a 54 by 99 foot aluminum barn housing about 5,000 square bales of hay and straw. Fire chief John Zimmerman and crews saved a corn crib and several other structures while rescuing 30 heifers and 10 pigs from the burning barn. Two portable tanks and long tanker lines supplied the fight as heat melted siding on a nearby house.

Frederick resident Joe Savage 29 a UPS supervisor won a national UPS employee poster contest. His entry promoting the relocation of Keiko the whale from the film Free Willy was chosen from 80 district winners and earned a prize trip for his daughter.

The Saavages and their 8 year old daughter joined a private Portland aquarium tour as Keiko the whale began a first return to the wild. A cargo plane refueled in flight for the non stop transport, with a prior similar trip two years earlier.

Wallace's death recalls chaotic day of shooting
May 15, 1972, Wallace was shot at a campaign rally in Laurel. James Alexander, then head of the Laurel Rescue Squad, recalls the rush to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring as FBI and Secret Service agents urged speed and pressured the ambulance crew. Wallace died later of natural causes at age 79 this week.
