Peterson inaugurated as Hood's seventh president
Hood College inaugurated its seventh president, Shirley Peterson, at a Friday ceremony on the campus quadrangle attended by about 1,700. Peterson, 54, began the role July 1 after Martha Church’s 20-year tenure, as 450-plus joined in the academic procession including 145 college and university representatives, 135 Hood class alums, 60 students, 80 faculty, and 22 trustees. United Way kicks off Frederick County campaign with volunteers
Craig Russell and 210 coworkers from 30 businesses volunteers worked on 40 projects at the Odd Fellows Home as United Way of Frederick County launches its 1995 capital drive aiming for 1.4 million dollars by November. Susan Shreve notes most funds come from area company campaigns and that last year the goal was missed by 200000. The agency also mails to groups and supports 22 nonprofits in the county.

Wal Mart opens in Frederick with expanded services
Wal Mart prepares to open a 127000 square foot store off Md 85 Evergreen Point in Frederick at 7 am Saturday. The store offers one hour photo service vision center and tire and lubrication center and will be open 7 am to 11 pm daily. Dry spell may curb farm and garden exhibits

Ijamsville man dies after Georgia plane crash
Frederick County resident Michael Hendrix, 35, of Loch Haven Road in Ijamsville, died from injuries from the August 21 commuter plane crash near Atlanta. He worked for Science Applications International Corp and was en route to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi to install a computer. Co worker John Tweedy said the left engine failed as the Embraer 120 turboprop reached cruising speed.
