Walkersville and Sheetz clash over water tap plan
Walkersville town commissioners and a Sheetz Corporation representative failed to reach agreement Wednesday on a water tap for a proposed store at Md 194 and Fountain Rock Road. Sheetz offered to fund a $200,000 water line under Md 194 to loop town lines, while the town cited limited taps and planning violations. A workshop next Wednesday will continue talks. Also honored retiring Dr. James Stoner Jr. and approved $3,000 to Glade Valley Athletic Association for reseeding fields, with a street light inquiry on Highlander Boulevard.

Domestic violence rise and elder abuse cited by sheriff office
The sheriff notes more incidents among spouses and siblings with elders at risk as Heartly House reports 2896 victims helped and 5600 hotline calls from 1993 to 1994. Director Sue Hecht says many battered spouses avoid calling, creating a cycle of violence and helplessness. Waiting lists reflect unmet demand for therapy, support, and legal aid.
