Charles Coss, who led Frederick Carroll Creek Linear Park for over two years, resigned Friday at the mayor’s request. In his statement he cited lack of vision and leadership and said the Carroll Creek project has great potential but needs strong commitment.
France will dispatch 4000 additional soldiers to the Persian Gulf and expel Iraqi military attaches in Paris after raids on French, Belgian and Canadian compounds in Kuwait. President Mitterrand pledged decisive action without hostage taking, while President Bush signaled U.S. support and described naval actions enforcing Baghdad sanctions. A planeload of Americans left London after being released from Iraq and Kuwait amid Westerners held as human shields.
Frederick marks the start of converting the Mountain City Mill at 305 Carroll St into the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center. Mayor Paul Gordon, County Commissioner J Anita Stup, and city and foundation leaders mix mortar to symbolize renovations of the three story brick building donated in 1987 by the Delaplaine and Randall families for galleries and classrooms.
Five Frederick men received POW medals in a solemn Port Detrick ceremony honoring their WWII captivity. Attendees included families and post personnel as Col. Charles Churchill praised their endurance. Recipients were Charles Forrest James Powell Jr Adam Keeney B G Zorzanello and Bruce Stone. Keeney recalled capture on January 19 1945 and life in Rainbow Division Company B 222 Infantry. He spoke of starvation cold and forced marches and said he traveled home to Frederick to marry after the war. Zorzanello described Corregidor hardships and later service in Korea. Powell a Frederick insurance agent noted time in captivity and dreams that linger.
President Bush will honor Middletown Elementary School as a national winner of the 1989 90 School Recognition Program. Three representatives including former principal Roy Clever and librarian Peg Makela will attend a ceremony at the Marriott Gateway in Arlington. A White House Rose Garden event will celebrate the milestone, while Middletown hosts a local commemorative ceremony with songs and student essays.
