A one lane bridge between Urbana and Thurston collapsed as a 23 ton dump truck loaded with gravel crossed Bennett's Creek. The truck carried 18 tons of stones to a lake behind Dr. G J Schipper’s Dixon road residence. No injuries. signs showing a 10 ton limit had disappeared.
A special gifts drive aims to raise 300000 by January 1 for Maryland Baptist College in Walkersville. Niemann Brunk leads about 30 volunteers calling Frederick area donors as part one of a two part effort to reach 3 million statewide.
A tuberculin testing program will be conducted in the 10th grades of Frederick County schools from October through April 1965. Dr. Forbes H. Burgess, Health Officer, will supervise, with Mrs. Joan L. Adams conducting the tests in schools.
The Burgess and Commissioners approved banning trick or treating in Middletown for Halloween. Instead the town will host organized parties after last year’s success when Mrs. Therman Gates hosted events drawing hundreds of children off the streets. No vandalism occurred. The meeting also advanced zoning planning and discussed Civil War Centennial markers near the town square and Reno Monument, with planning for metal markers and support sought from officials.
The Maryland Board of Public Works approved an 8.3 million contract for six main buildings and related structures in the Breathedsville prison project near Hagerstown. The project aims to confine 1200 inmates, with other contracts completed or near completion. Governor Tawes ordered bids to stay within bond money. The board includes Governor Tawes, Comptroller Louis Goldstein and Treasurer John Luetkemeyer.
The City Planning Commission again postpones action on rezoning the J. Otis King farm located in the one mile belt. Downtown interests oppose the proposal while two adjacent owners favor it. A final decision is delayed to allow consultant Julian Tarrant to share an opinion as Montgomery County investors seek commercial, industrial, and residential rezoning.
A state fire marshal probes arson in two weekend blazes in Frederick. The George Rodock coal yard fire on East Fifth Street caused about 500 dollars damage including coal and lumber. the North Frederick Elementary School fire damaged books materials a plastic skylight and part of the roof. Fire crews answered Friday 6 04 p m and Saturday 12 49 a m with city police detectives assisting.
Frederick pitcher Jim Trout age 18 signs with the Baltimore Orioles after a standout baseball career from Little League to Frederick High School and American Legion. Trout posted a 9-2 high school record and 13-3 in Legion play while also excelling in basketball and batting .375.
Ford Motor Co. has offered an economic package to the United Auto Workers matching Chrysler’s terms. The plan aims to quicken a contract for about 125,000 Ford workers before any strike deadline, with wage increases and benefits similar to those accepted by the UAW at Chrysler.
House Speaker John W. McCormack urged about 800 Maryland Democrats at a Clarence Long fundraiser to unite behind President Johnson. He attacked Barry Goldwater as impulsive and warned a world war could threaten children and civilians, noting a $30 billion military buildup under Democrats.
