Bank Tax Case Argued Over Deposits Taxability in Maryland
The first of three bank cases reached Westminster before Judge Brashears. Henry Eck, a Savings Bank of Baltimore depositor, challenges a quarter of 1 percent franchise tax on deposits, arguing an 1888 act exempts such deposits from taxation. The county counters that deposits may be taxed and that no exemption applies, aiming to avoid double taxation.
