Sheriff Woodson McCord far outsmarted a lynch mob by moving Samuel Hisle from Lexington to Winchester for examination. Hisle, accused of assaulting Mrs. Mary Case, faced an armed sheriff as deputies kept guard. The unarmed captive stood before the crowd and declared his guards would shoot if needed, causing the mob to disperse.
On September 13 in Pennsylvania near Johnson's Corner farmer John W. Carter, age 60, was found dead in a wagon with a crushed skull and money missing. A Black man described as Walter Howard Collins, from Chester, is sought by Wilmington and Philadelphia police. The scene showed a cobblestone in a sack and blood on horse hooves.
Five thousand coal miners paraded in Mahanoy City Pennsylvania to honor President John Mitchell. A large American flag was carried by 24 white dressed schoolgirls as part of the event. The procession featured banners pledging union recognition and the eight hour day. Mitchell urged union recognition and wage improvements guiding a unified drive for labor rights.
Coal operator George B Markle, near Hazleton, told reporters at Bellevue Stratford that a general strike next spring is unlikely. He noted possible local unrest but said miners are better off than before and most disputes stem from contract labor around the mines. A separate item reports an $80,000 hall of science gift to Lebanon Valley College by an unnamed steel magnate, with construction to start this fall.
Joan Blair alias Todelo Giade was captured as he stepped from the western penitentiary in Allegheny on charges of blowing the Gellwood Bank safe in Blair County on March 10 19. The accused, with prior post office robbery sentence, is linked to a Belmont robbery involving money bonds stamps jewelry and a large deposited sum. Police expect further arrests of accomplices as the investigation continues.
A street parade opening the 20th national encampment of the Union Veteran Legion of the United States drew about 256 members in Wilmington Delaware on September 14. Peabody Massachusetts September 14 Senator Henry Cabot Lodge urged government subsidies to revive New England shipping and expand markets during a dinner at the town hall. He argued ship owners face protection gaps while competing with highly protected foreign fleets. Separately Philadelphia reports say charges against William S. Leib, treasurer, were forwarded to President Roosevelt. resignation not officially demanded.
