Faster Mail Service Plan To Be Set Up

Frederick is included in a new post office arrangement to speed mail in the 5000 square mile District of Columbia area. Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield announced that letters mailed before 3 pm on business days should reach their destinations on the first delivery trip of the next business day. The plan reorganizes the metro area delivery system into 21 sectional centers and two concentration centers Arlington and Silver Spring. About two million people in the counties around Washington are affected. Tests show 98.7 percent of the million pieces can be delivered next morning if posted before 5 pm. Most area mail will go through the new centers, not the old Washington City Post Office. Maryland and Virginia counties send mail through Arlington or Silver Spring. The plan claims only a nominal cost increase and does not affect parcels, second or third class mail. Also listed are Montgomery Prince Georges Anne Arundel Charles St. Marys Calvert.
