Unseasonably cool weather and single digit to low 50s overnight lows sweep the county. Temperatures dip to 49 at the State Police Barracks and 47 at Gambrill State Park with a 74 degree high at the barracks yesterday.
Three women from the school guard, Mrs. Helen Crum, Mrs. Betty Hargett, and Mrs. Alice Farr, begin full time meter duty to collect parking violations. Mrs. Crum and Mrs. Hargett handle patrolling city streets while Mrs. Farr works Friday evenings. the initiative aims to relieve regular police for other tasks.

Four Frederick men and a Guilford Township suspect faced burglary charges after a midnight car stop near a Tropical Treat stand. Harold Perkins Jr and three others pleaded guilty to attempted burglary. penalties ranged from six months to three years with concurrent terms. Perkins received school commitment and fines.
Memorial services for Mrs. Millard Esler, who led the Frederick County Council of Homemakers Clubs until her August death, were held at a Council Board meeting. The fall program for 35 member clubs was planned, with Mrs. Austin Kemp presiding and Mrs. Carrell Hara and Mrs. James Schoonover in charge.

Myersville imposes a further water use ban after a special city council session. Mayor Evasson Doub cites a new ordinance prohibiting lawn and garden watering, car washing, pool filling, and any use of town water with a $25 fine for violators. Officials plan to meet with the state health department to identify additional water sources, as the town relies on mountain springs for supply.
LeRoy Richard Herbert of Adamsstown, a colored man, is jailed on an assault and battery charge after cutting Robert Navier and breaking into a West South Street house following a disturbance near Saint All Saints Street. Police Lt Ralph Potts and several officers investigated the scene.

The Boy Scouts help with collection as residents place toys on front porches and county residents donate at the tax shop starting eight in the morning until the drive ends.
Gov. David L. Lawrence of Pennsylvania denies joining Southern Democrats in a bid to unseat Paul M. Butler as National Democratic Committee chair. Butler accuses Lawrence of involvement in segregationist material. Lawrence says the claim is ridiculous and notes Butler once associated with Southern members. The dispute could peak at next Wednesday's NDC meeting.
Moscow reports the Soviet Union successfully launched a second interplanetary rocket aimed at the moon. It is expected to reach the moon at 2 05 a m Moscow time on September 14. The mission continues the space race amid Khrushchev’s U S trip preparations.
