UN and Israel deny gunships strafed guerrillas in Lebanon
U N spokesman Timur Goksel said five Nepalese peacekeepers were wounded by mortar fire near Siddigin as Shiite guerrillas and the South Lebanon Army clashed. He noted Israeli helicopters hovered but did not strafing. Lebanese sources claimed gunships hit guerrilla positions near Kafra and Yater. Israeli officials denied any Israeli forces operating in south Lebanon. The conflict follows recent U N efforts to stabilize the peacekeeping mission amid cross border attacks that have killed several UN personnel.
